This website is dedicated to exploring the potential and existing instances where wildland fire science and policy intersect with the humanities: arts, sociology, philosophy, history, and literature.
Our objectives with this website are twofold:
- We believe that collaborative programs featuring the Humanities can help broaden the scope of work at Joint Fire Science Program (JFSP)-funded Regional Consortia for dealing with fire issues and their publics.
- To urge the adoption of a more holistic awareness of immediate fire issues in particular places and bioregions; and to encourage thoughtful and varied public engagement with those issues.
As we explain in the “Why Humanities” page, we believe that a cultural transformation and reframing of the wildfire dilemma seems necessary, and that Humanities may broaden the discussion and lead to such a reframing.
